Alessandro Girasoli, was born in San Pancrazio Salentino, Italy, in 1958. He began his musical studies as a self-taught musician, then studied piano, composition and instrumentation under the guidance of Roberta Spisso, Sergio Prodigal, Paolo Arca, Louis Gallucci, and Franco Arigliano. He attended specialization courses with Donatoni and Sciarrino, graduating in Orchestration at the Conservatoire "Gioacchino Rossini" of Pesaro, where he participated in in composition competitions, performances, concerts, and teaching. He specialized in the history of music and musical instruments, and theater history at the Interuniversity Consortium For. Com. His thesis was on the semiotics of tarantism and history and teaching of theater. From 1989 to 1998, he was involved in the indigenous music of Salento, from research and study in the field, to the rediscovery of the traditional songs of Salento and Grica. He was a member of the group "Canzoniere di Terra d'Otranto", recording the first CD of Salentinian folk music, entitled Low Music, and was later co-founder of the group "Aramire", with whom he recorded "Opillopillopì" and "Southeast", and toured the United States in 1990. He collaborated on the CD "Aramire", writing the insertions and listening guides with transcription of the music and songs recorded in the field, and also published articles in journals and books specializing in folk and indigenous music.
Alessandro's electronic composition, Campane, was orchestrated and performed by The Colburn Youth Orchestra in 2013, conducted by Maxim Eshkenazy. He was commissioned to write Clamor, an original composition in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act, for the 35th Anniversary concert of Dancing Wheels Company in Cleveland, Ohio. He has collaborated with musical and performance artists Renato Centonze, Mina D'Elia, Enzo Fina, Vito Mazzotta, and choreographer Sarah Swenson, and Vox Dance Theatre, with whom his music has received world premieres in the United States.
Alessandro’s music research is devoted to the rediscovery of primal sound that is in each of us and it’s effect on our psyches. Through the combination of sounds, new sound enters the mind and the senses of the listener, who absorbs it, making it their own.
